Since it seems to be a big topic right now, I figured I’d throw my two cents in. Why are people so critical of that series of ads? So maybe bulimia wasn’t my eating disorder, but don’t they kinda hold the sufferer hostage? That’s how I’ve always felt, with my depression, OCD, ED… My parents would back me up. They ‘just wanted their daughter back.’ Same with my brother’s ADHD. Hostage is exactly how it feels. Was it a little extreme? Of course. Tasteless? Nope. True? Yes.

At least it got some attention and discussion to the issue.

This reminds me of a Chicken Soup chapter I read. I’m paraphrasing so forgive me if I get it a little wrong but in the (true?) story the mother died after a long illness. Her husband and children were devestated. One of the secrets, the mother had kept all her life was about a little china pot that she kept on the very top shelf of the larder. Each time she cooked, she would take down the pot and pinch some of the contents into her dish. Family and friends would always marvel at how wonderful her food tasted and always ask her ‘what is your special ingredient?’. She would shake her head and tap her nose, never revealing her secret. So, when she died, they went to her larder and took down the pot. They took off the lid and looked inside. There was just a small scrap of paper, which read ‘do everything with love’.

Now, you can have a little sigh at the lovely sentiment in that story and if you hold on to that feeling you can look at this advert with the same starry eyes.

(The fact that no love can ever ever be bought with diamonds is by-the-by. I would have preferred it if he used his jars to make hugs and kisses, but I suppose they are not very profitable, heheh)

It was a great adaptation of the original musical… Tim Burton brought something to the show that I didn’t quite get from the Patty LuPone revival: ambiance. A sense of time and place. So amazingly visual, which didn’t hurt for such a bloodbath.

As my friend and I left, the only question I had on my mind was, “why didn’t the studio do a tie-in with Hot Pockets?” Like… free tickets… or a special “Human” flavor. Yum.

I noticed recently that “Googling” the movie “Gone Baby Gone” brought up two pay-per-click ads - one from Moviefon and another from Miramax. The landing page for Moviefon brings you to a review of the movie along with show-times in your local area, which makes sense since it is a destination site and they are generating money by arbitraging the eyeballs they collect into visitors for their banner ads and clicks for the local theatres.

But the landing page for the Miramax ads brings you to a page that displays the other award-winning movies that are potential Oscar candidates, including “No Country for Old Men.” The message on this page isn’t so much as to see the movie, but to be convinced that these movies should win awards. Clearly, Miramax is looking to spread some PR about how their line-up of movies should get Oscar nods this year by displaying pay-per-click ads.

Who said that corporate America wasn’t looking at pay-per-click ads as a way of spreading their brand messaging?

Here is what the landing page looks like when you click on the PPC campaign.

So inevitably I will end up writing about things I like and are relevant to me in attempt to make others aware of their existance, but never to force them to like them. I’ll try to explain things that seem obvious to me but not to others even though sometimes I fail at it, missing important facts and details.
For a bit of useless info, I read about one thousand feeds with Google Reader nowadays and sometimes I delete some of them which haven’t been updated in ages or ones that seem irrelevant to me (like when I want to buy a car, I might be reading some blogs about cars and reviews but then the interest dies out). It’s just a passing thing, if I get over a stage in my life like buying a house, a car, a new camera, chances are I won’t be interested in reading about housing prices or specialty camera reviews in the upcoming year.

I’ve noticed two executions today that sparked my interest, some very strange looking Audi TT posters on “I Believe in Advertising“. Here’s just one of the two ads coming from Italy (DDB), image from the blog linked earlier:

Audi TT - Welcome on board.

The graphics might make your head feel like a frisbee and at most you can relate them to those things made by the kind of people that feature in CR with their board designs, album art and so on. The whole thing about snowboarding is having a board that looks cool when you ride it, when you’re stationary and when you’re taking a picture with it. I never went skiing in my life so I wouldn’t know but the ultimate goal of a snowboard is to make its owner proud, most designs being easily recognised by those passionate about this kind of thing. You can picture two blokes in a film saying ‘Did you see Ellie? She got herself a Salomon‘ - ‘Yeah mate, I’ve noticed, shame really, she was so hot‘. Yeah, like that! Your board just becomes more important than you when your name isn’t famous.

I had to mention all this about snowboarding and boards and whatnot because the Audi TT Quattro is “known to be the one preferred by snowboarders. These two ads were planned only for snowboarding magazines. “

Excuse me? Really? I’m a bit in doubt about a few things here:

Yes, we know snowboarding is an expensive sport if you’re not privileged enough to have been born in France, Austria, northern Italy and the Alps, anywhere in Norway or near a decent slope, meaning about 85% of Europe that was unfortunate so targetting these ads towards boarders makes some sense. All these exotic locations are expensive for those that don’t live in any of the countries mentioned, chances are even if your country has a few locations, they are either rubbish or will damage your board. Or it just so happens that there’s no snow one given year and you’re screwed.

Since I’ve been snowboarding I haven’t noticed anyone with an Audi carrying their snowboarding equipment because Audi is a posh car, snowboarding is a rough sport. It’s not all glamorous neon pink suits and goggles shining in pictures. People reading snowboarding magazines know that. “Elbows are red, ankles are blue, three hours of make-up will probably do” (source) - it’s like that, you see. You can afford to buy an Audi but dragging it up all the way to the slope will make you feel bad about torturing it and you’ll have to stuff your things in the car sa it’s not that big on the inside.

No, I haven’t been going to cheap ass resorts just for the record.

People who can afford a board with graphics like those in the ad (about £500 for your boots, board and bindings) and holidays can probably afford an Audi (About £33,000) but as I said earlier, Italy seems to have an interesting take on advertising and consumer insights. Very much like France I’d say. Given we’re only talking about snowboarding magazines in Italy it seems odd. I know they’re into expensive cars and luxury is by far more important in Italy than it is in the UK but this is taking it a bit too far. It doesn’t make sense, why make an ad only for Italy then? Audi isn’t for sale only in Italy.

The moment you buy an Audi and take it to the slope you’re no longer a snowboarder, you’re a poser. It’s just a tag that you’ll never get rid of, unless everyone else in the parking lot owns an Audi, a Porsche, a Volvo XC90 and so on. Then I’ll take my words back!

It just feels as if they’re saying “Look, we made this Audi just for you, because you’re a snowboarder. We even made you ads to go with it. Will you please like it, please?“

Is Italy that different from the rest of the world?

ABC Family is one of the very best channels available in my area. Quite honestly I have cable TV for only a few channels, ABC Family being one of them. The line up of alternatives is horrible and because cable and dish companies continue to keep ala Carte a pipe dream I am stuck with all the rest .. but I digress.

ABC Family is really good. Great programming and it probably owns 75% of my viewing time, at least the time I am not watching movies. So being such an avid watcher I have noticed a disturbing trend over the last months. They have begun to run ad units within the show taking up a solid 1/3 of the viewing space! These ads, much like those Google announced for their YouTube model are extremely distracting.

Now I’ll admit I have a Media Center with dual tuners. I time shift almost everything I watch and skip commercials - I am part of the problem, but let’s be clear. They did not reduce the volume of ads running in the time slot. In fact a full 20 minutes, minimum, run every hour. That is 1 minute for every 2 minutes of viewing! Can you imagine if they broke it up in that way?!

I am a marketer by profession. I love this stuff. I love commercials that are compelling, entertaining and educational, but the problem is that most aren’t. They lack value to the consumer. Moreover they are not a performance based ad unit. They are very passive and the metrics of measurement are skewed every which way. The problem is the advertising revenue model is broken and who is left holding the bag? The consumer.

This rant is a cry out for help. If you have the resources and want to create a great new business then please dot com Web 2.0 company, please redefine the business of advertising to be one that does not continue to inch more and more into our shows. I don’t mind product placement, but make it contextually relevant. Make it so I am engaged as a consumer.

I hate having to do this again because it defeats the whole purpose, but no ad today for Ad Friday. Some things came up and a possible professional opportunity I had to prepare for (plus I couldn’t get my mind off it) so I didn’t focus on making an ad for today. The ideas are all there, but I didn’t want to put up a half-assed concept up for the sake of putting it up. My brainstorming has gone well though and that’s a positive.

But I would like to post a link to post a video of one of my all-time favorite commercials. It’s simple, the copy is brilliant, and it gets right to the core of the product:

La Vie En Rose is a full-color bimonthly magazine devoted entirely to Lolita fashion. If you don’t know what Lolita fashion is, a quick summary of it would be “a Japanese street fashion becoming popular around the world that involves wearing modest, high-quality clothing with roots in Japanese street fashion and the Victorian, Edwardian and Baroque ages.”

This magazine is the only english printed magazine aimed towards western lolita’s which is produced outside of Japan. This is the type of market that my magazine is aiming towards, and this shows that there actually would be a market for it in the first place. They break even on every magazine they produce, but sadly, the magazine is having to stop printing, due to finacial difficulties.

I visited earlier this week and met him for a fun conversation. Topic? His annual predictions for the tech industry which are pretty darn accurate.

We also talk about Federated Media and advertising trends for blogs.

Great conversation, if you’re a blogger who fancies making money with your blogging (or other media, for that matter) you’ll want to listen to this one.

Regarding the cell phone comment, I’ve been playing with putting my interviews live via my cell phone on Qik, but here it didn’t work very well because the cell phone service sucks where Federated Media’s offices are.

Federated Media does the advertising for Boing Boing, TechCrunch, Dooce, and many other popular bloggers and media developers.
